Visiting Chambord from Blois

Travel journal · Source updated on 15 September 2026
At Chambord, you first look up at the roof: chimneys, lanterns and turrets stand out against the sky. Then come the staircase, rooms and terraces. The estate is extensive; allow time to enjoy the outdoors too.
How much time should you allow?
We suggest around 1½ to 2 hours for the castle alone. To enjoy the gardens and estate as well, allow half a day or a full day, depending on your chosen activities.
By car, allow approximately 25 to 30 minutes from Blois and 25 to 30 minutes from Le Cottage de Chitenay. These are indicative times, excluding parking and the walk to the entrance, and vary with traffic.
The staircase: a first moment of wonder
At the centre of the keep, two flights of stairs wind around an open core. You can climb on opposite sides, catch sight of one another and yet never cross paths. Leonardo da Vinci’s influence is present in the project, although the staircase cannot be attributed to him with certainty.
From the rooms to the terraces
The terraces bring you close to the rooftops you admired from the ground. Chimneys, sculptures and lanterns take on another scale. Inside, look up at the vaults too; the castle’s visiting aids help explain their decoration.
Arrive without rushing
Parking, the approach to the castle and checks take time: allow a margin before a booked tour. Decide in advance what your ticket should include, then keep the estate map handy. Outdoor activities depend on the season and weather.
Our advice for the day
Avoid fitting in too many monuments. A visit to Chambord, a break and some time outdoors can fill the day. Check tickets, opening hours and access before leaving; travel time depends on your accommodation and traffic.
Choose a way to visit with children
The estate offers options including family tours, puzzle booklets and workshops. Choose something suited to the children’s ages and check availability for your date. The Histopad offers another way to explore the rooms.
Alternate interiors and fresh air
After the apartments and terraces, take a break before exploring outdoors. The Grande Promenade and cycling activities offer other ways to extend the day: check the estate’s access rules and conditions before setting off.
And in the evening?
After the rooms, terraces and walking, returning home will be welcome. Plan dinner at your holiday home or choose a restaurant nearby. Save Blois or Cheverny for the following day.
