Three days in the Loire Valley from Blois

Travel journal · Source updated on 15 September 2026
Three days give you time to discover Blois, devote a day to a major castle and head out to the villages. Use this as a starting point for your stay, with one main visit each day and enough space for meals, journeys and discoveries along the way.
Day 1 · Take time over Blois
Start at the royal castle, then explore the old-town streets. Depending on the children’s ages and your interests, add the Maison de la Magie or a walk towards the Loire. The stepped streets and viewpoints can also be enjoyed without a ticket.

Day 2 · Chambord or Cheverny
Chambord draws visitors for its architecture and extensive estate; Cheverny offers a different experience around its castle and gardens. Choose whichever appeals most. Saving one for another stay is better than cutting both short. Cheverny is a short drive from Le Cottage de Chitenay.

Day 3 · A village, or the road towards Amboise
A village stroll changes the pace. For a longer excursion, choose Chenonceau or Amboise according to your interests and the journey. Keep the return trip in mind, particularly with young children.

A few pointers for planning
- Check opening days and book visits that require a reservation.
- Calculate journeys from your address in Blois or Chitenay.
- Alternate sightseeing days with more flexible time.
- For a walk or cycle ride, choose a route suited to your group.
A longer stay without overloaded days
If you have four or five days, put a more relaxed day between the major visits. Blois, Chambord, Cheverny and Chaumont-sur-Loire offer different experiences; choose stops for what interests you rather than trying to tick them all off.
You can also devote a day to Blois on foot and another to walking further afield. Consult the tourist office’s routes to plan a cycle outing suited to your group.
What if you are coming without a car?
Start by planning days around Blois on foot. For each excursion, check both outward and return transport for your dates before booking admission: a castle easily reached by car may not be as convenient by public transport. If travelling as a group, agree a shared transport budget too.
Prepare the details before arrival
Note your booked visits, journey times from the accommodation and a rainy-day alternative. For days in town, our Blois parking guide brings together free and paid options. Leave some time without reservations so you can enjoy your holiday home as well.
