Visiting Cheverny: castle, gardens and village

Visiting Cheverny: castle, gardens and village

Travel journal · Source checked on 7 October 2026

Cheverny lends itself to a day with time for breaks: visit the castle, stroll through the gardens, then discover the village and its wines. It is a short drive from Le Cottage de Chitenay and an easy day trip from Blois without changing accommodation.

The castle: take time over the interiors

Start with the castle’s furnished rooms before heading outside. With children, choose a few details to look at together rather than trying to remember everything. If you also want to see the Tintin exhibition or explore the park, check the ticket options before buying.

The estate states that it opens throughout the year, with seasonal opening hours. According to the information checked on 7 October 2026, tickets are purchased on arrival, without advance booking. Check the official visiting information before setting off.

The gardens, at your own pace

Set aside part of your visit for a walk outdoors: the gardens offer a different view of the castle. Flowers and walking opportunities change with the seasons. A simple plan — castle, gardens, break — can work just as well as a fuller day.

How much time should you allow?

The castle suggests around 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes for the castle and gardens, or 3 to 4 hours with the Tintin exhibition and park. We recommend keeping half a day free, or longer if you would like lunch nearby and an unhurried look around the village.

The village and Maison des vins

A short walk from the castle, the Maison des vins de Cheverny introduces the two local appellations. Cheverny produces white, red and rosé wines; Cour-Cheverny is a white-wine appellation made from the Romorantin grape. Check the Maison des vins opening hours when planning your stop.

To meet a producer, Domaine Le Portail describes its visiting opportunities near the castle. Contact the estate directly for the conditions and to book if required.

From Blois or Chitenay

Allow approximately 20 to 25 minutes by car from Blois or 10 minutes from Le Cottage de Chitenay, depending on traffic. These indicative journey times were checked in October 2026. Free car parks are available near the estate; also allow time to walk to the entrance.

Our suggestion for the day

Visit the castle in the morning, pause for lunch, then choose between the gardens, discovering the wines or a short village walk. Avoid adding a second major castle when travelling with young children: you will enjoy each stop more.

Where to stay

Le Cottage de Chitenay sleeps up to ten guests, with an enclosed garden, a heated pool from May to September and a year-round hot tub. Discover Chitenay’s history and our ideas for exploring the Loire Valley from Blois.
